Surviving Antarctica was originally published as "''No Child's Game: Reality TV 2083''". Surviving Antarctica: Reality TV 2083 is a fictional novel written by Andrea White, Houston Mayor Bill White is her husband.

In 2006, the book won the Golden Spur Award given by the Texas State Reading Association for the best book by a Texas author, and was nominated for a Texas Bluebonnet Award for children's literature.[1]

Plot

Surviving Antarctica takes place in the year 2083 in a television crazed country of America. The Secretary of "Entertainment" is the Head of the Department of Entertainment, and basically America! Public schools shut down and are replaced with "Edu-TV" which are lessons with Interactive Quizzes on a television screen. It is mandatory and only goes up to Eighth Grade. After completing the required Eighth Year of Edu-TV, one must pay for High School and College. In the year 2083, America is awfully poor and very bad in the economy. People live in shacks worse than Hoovervilles during the Great Depression. So to pay for further education, a few sponsored scholarships are given out. The most popular is "The Toss" which is a game of pure chance. A person calls out a number, and the 14 year-old wishing for the full scholarship rolls a die, hoping it will land on that number.

Five kids (out of billions) didn't make it. In Edu-TV the Social Studies/History show is called "Historical Survivor". The Secretary of DOE (aka "Hot Sauce" by her nightshift employees) gathers a "lucky few" to re-enact parts of history. The five kids (Robert, Polly, Grace, Andrew, and Billy) see an advertisement by Hot Sauce for a new Historical Survivor Series that features kids. It is called "Historical Survivor: Antarctica". She offers large amounts of money to whoever is chosen to re-enact the expedition of Robert F. Scott. They had to fill out an application to be eligible.

Characters

This novel has seven main characters:

  • Robert Johnson: An African American kid from Houston, who has gone through many floods and endured many unthinkable things
  • Polly Pritchard: Basically a bookworm. Has a photographic memory, and keeps true to the saying, “Those who don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it”.
  • Andrew Morton: A lazy couch potato, who in the end becomes a strong and admirable person.
  • Grace Untoka: An Iñupiat Eskimo whose frozen tundra homeland is turned into a toxic waste dump by Congress, and is forced to live on a Hopi reservation where she is harassed by Hopi bullies. She has a dream of moving to Antarctica with the rest of her tribe and resume the life style her grandfather talked about so much when she (Grace) was a child.
  • Billy Kanalski: A selfish 14 year-old who lied greatly on his application, and becomes more of a nuisance than ever. However, he becomes more friendly towards the end.
  • Secretary of Entertainment (AKA Hot Sauce): A lady who basically controls what the citizens of the USA know. She is what causes the kids to suffer on their Historical Survivor simulation, and is the primary antagonist of the story.
  • Steve: A worker of the DOE. He works in the night shift. They edit what the kids did that day. They are the only DOE employees who care about the kids and adults who endure Hot Sauce's sick game. However, he helps guide the children and ultimately is able to reveal the true events that take place behind the scenes to the world.yo chill
