Vata Matanu Garcia (born in 19 March 1961 in Damba, Angola) was a former football player who used to play as a striker.

Club career

Vata is notable for his run with Portuguese club S.L. Benfica. He scored a controversial goal that lead S.L. Benfica into the finals of the Uefa Champions Cup in 1989.[1] From a left side corner, Vata handled the ball into to the goal.

Vata started his football career at Progresso Associação Sambizanga, and would later represent Recreio de Águeda, Varzim S.C., S.L. Benfica, Estrela da Amadora, S.C.U. Torreense, Floriana Football Club and Gelora Dewata before ending his career as a player in 1999. He had a brief stint as a Futsal player (1993/94) in the United States, before moving to Indonesia to play for Gelora Dewata as a player-assistant manager.

International career

Vata was capped 65 times for the Angola national football team, including one 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.[2]

Career as manager

As a manager, Vata coached Guntur Bali(1999/00), International School in Bali ("Senior Coach")(2000) and Mitra Kukar, Kalimantan ("Head Coach")(2004/05) from Indonesia. He coached the European Football Institute ("High Performance Coach, Senior and Reserve teams") from Australia.
