The process to build the GAN can take on many forms, the primary method used by telecommunications carriers or ISP (internet service providers) is to interconnect their network routers to competitor routers to form a Wider Area Network. The distinction between accessible networks from one provider is sometimes interpreted as the carriers owned network from end to end. The fact is most carriers own equipment within co-locations or data centers, typically owned by ILEC (incumbent local exchange carriers). The ILEC will lease a space in which the carrier or providers of services install and maintain equipment for communications, and then these carriers will sub-lease the services in the multitude of solutions available. The GAN is not entirely owned and operated by one single provider; it requires a multitude of carriers to make a GWAN possible |
