Cyril Vasil S.J. JCL (10 April 1965) is the current Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches since his appointement by Pope Benedict XVI on 7 May 2009. [1] He had formerly served as Rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute.

Vasil was born in Kosice, Slovakia. From 1982 to 1987 he attended the Faculty of Theology of Cyril-Metodiana of Bratislava. He was ordained priest in 1987. In 1989 he finished his licentiate in canon law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome.

On 15 October 1990 entered the Society of Jesus in 2001 and delivered the solemn profession. In 1994 he graduated in Eastern Canon Law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute.

In 2002 he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Eastern Canon Law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and pro-rector of the same. In May 2007 he was appointed rector of the same institute.

He serves as a Consultor of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants. In 2005 he was appointed expert to the Synod of Bishops. It is also a professor in other universities, including the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, the Theological Faculty of the University of Bratislava and the University of Trnava. In 2003 he was appointed Spiritual Director of the International Federal of Scouts of Europe.

In addition to Slovak, speaks Latin, Italian, English, Russian, Ukrainian, French, German, Spanish, Greek and paleoslavo.

He is the author of numerous books and articles and is working with the Vatican Radio.

He was appointed as Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches by Pope Benedict XVI on 7 May 2009. He recieved the appointed of Titular Archbishop of Ptolemais in Libya at the same time. He succeeded Antonio Maria Vegliò who was appointed as President of Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants.
