Stop Hunger Now's Operation Sharehouse program is a volunteer-based effort through which participants package high protein, dehydrated meals for use in crisis situations and which provides a highly nutritious meal to support school feeding programs in schools and orphanages around the world.[2]

Programs

Operation Sharehouse Program

A volunteer-driven program, Operation Sharehouse provides the opportunity for people of all ages to come together to package nutritious meals for the world’s hungry. The dehydrated meals include rice, soy, vegetables, and flavored vitamins.[4] Each meal costs only 25 cents.[4]

Six servings of meals are funneled into a bag and then sealed. A long shelf life of 3-5 years allows them to be used in school feeding programs and orphanages worldwide.[4]

Rapid Response Program

SHN responds to disasters within 72 hours, with food and medical aid.[8]

Emergency Food Relief Program

SHN provides emergency food aid, medical supplies and food-related necessities to areas impacted by natural disasters, civil upheaval, drought and famine.[8]

Seeds Program

SHN equips people in areas of chronic drought and famine with the resources necessary to rebuild their lives. By providing seeds for planting, experts in specialty and experimental gardening projects, and tools, we encourage self-sufficiency and independence in these populations.[8]

Medicines

SHN provides life-saving medicine and medical support in crisis areas. Our medical programs help local partner organizations increase life expectancy of recipients in their countries by providing items such as: parasite medicine, cough syrup, antibiotics and other life-saving medicines.[8]

Micro-credit Loans

SHN gives new opportunities to impoverished women to climb out of poverty. It funds partner organizations, allowing them to provide low-interest, revolving loans aimed at empowering women to start their own businesses.

Capacity Building Program

SHN supports partner organizations with capacity building grants designed to improve transportation of food aid, and upgrade food storage locations and local program infrastructure. These improvements lead to more effective use of resources, better channeling of emergency food relief, and greater cost-effectiveness.

History

Since 1998, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world.[9]

Stop Hunger Now created its meal packaging program, Operation Sharehouse, in 2005. The program perfected the assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. The food stores easily, has a shelf-life of five years and transports quickly for delivery to remote areas for school lunch feeding programs and crisis situations.[9]

In 2007, more than 3.5 million meals were assembled. Surpassing projections, another 5.9 million meals were packaged in 2008.[9]
