Electrabel is a public limited company, statutorily established in 1905. Its actual name originates from 1990, after the regrouping of the companies Intercom, Ebes and Unerg.
Electrabel is a Belgium-based energy corporation, with power plants and customers across Europe.

Electrabel forms part of GDF SUEZ − shareholder at 100% − , one of the leading energy providers in the world, active across the entire energy value chain, in electricity and natural gas, upstream to downstream.
Electrabel was founded in 1990 when Intercom, Ebes and Unerg merged to form the present company. For a long time the French company Suez held a slight majority stake in Electrabel, but in 2005 that stake increased to 96.7%. The rest of the stock remained tradable at Euronext, but Electrabel was removed from the BEL20 as a result. Suez finally completed a squeeze-out of the remaining shareholders on 10 July 2007, when the company was delisted from the stock exchange. Following Suez's 2008 merger with Gaz de France, Electrabel is now a subsidiary of GDF Suez. Electrabel has a joint venture with the Italian utility "Acea".

Electrabel operates in the Benelux where it is market leader. In this market, the company sells electricity, natural gas, energy products and energy services to residential, professional and industrial customers and public institutions. It also generates electricity and heat in a diversified production park. These activities are supported and optimized by portfolio management and trading operations of the GDF SUEZ Group on the European and international energy markets.

Electrabel supplies electricity and natural gas to six million customers in the Benelux. It sold 97 400 GWh of electricity and 72 000 GWh of natural gas on this market in 2008. The company offers its customers innovative energy solutions with added value and a customized service. To develop energy products and services, it gets the most out of the synergy between electricity and natural gas offered by the GDF SUEZ Group.

The market leadership of Electrabel in Belgium has grown historically. To date, the company remains the largest producer and supplier of electricity in the country.
