Before the Hauntings

In the small town of Listowel, Ontario. A peasant woman uncovers the body of a dead little girl, who is severly mutilated. She quickly calls in the police. Insp. Lyndon Smires is called to investigate the murder. The murder was commited at the height of the Whitechapple killings and the town begins to suspect that the notorious Jack the Ripper has paid them a visit. Smires cannot find any leads on the murder. But then he starts getting reports about a strange drifter that keeps on carrying a black fleece with him. The witnesses keep claiming they see this man who seems normal at first but is possessive over his fleece. One witness claimed he saw the man muttering to himself about "power" and "notorious". Smires finally decides to question the drifter when one witness claims she saw him wearing female clothing. The drifter reveals himself as Amedene Chatel and tells Smires that "your the one who this fleece is for". Smires discovers the girl's clothes and belongings, including a small pocket knife. Smires questions Chatel, who confesses to killing her and a number of other victems in other towns. Claiming that he is "One of the men that intend to beat Jack's record". Smires attempts to intimidate Chatel out of anger at his upcoming execution, but Chatel simply states that "death is just another opportunity for notority". Chatel was hung and dubbed "The Listowel Ripper".
