Way Down in the Hole

Way Down In The Hole is a song written by singer songwriter Tom Waits and was included on his 1987 album Franks Wild Years, which was later made into a stage production.

The song is notable due to the fact that it was used as the theme tune for HBO's The Wire throughout its five season run, with cover versions by The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Neville Brothers, Domaje, Steve Earle (who, incidentally, also had a recurring role as recovering drug addict Walon in the series) as well as using Waits' original version in the second season.

The lyrics appear to be religous, with temptation and baring one's soul to Jesus being the song's central theme.
