Daniel George Edward Hall (born, 17 November 1891) was Emeritus Professor of the History of South East Asia in the University of London, Professor of Southeast Asian History at Cornell University. Author of A History of South-East Asia. "This massive study remains the most important single history of the region, providing encyclopedic coverage of material published up to the time of its 1981 revision." (1)

Biography

D.G.E. Hall was educated at the Hitchin Grammar School, and entered Department of History, King's College London in 1913, graduated in 1916 with first-class honours. Awarded with an Inglis Studentship, Hall earned an M.A. at University of London with thesis on mercantile aspects of English foreign policy during the reign of Charles II. Military service with Inns of Court Regiment, also toured Western Front with Lena Ashworth concert party. Early 1919, senior history master at Royal Grammar School, Worcester. Summer 1919, married Helen Eugenie Banks and began teaching history at Bedales School, Hampshire. May 1921, arrived in Rangoon to take up chair of history at the University of Rangoon. First published work on Burmese history was a paper entitled “English Relations with Burma, 1587-1686" published in the Journal of the Burma Research Society, 1927. 1934: Returned to England due to family developing trachoma, which prevented them from remaining in the tropics. 1934-1949: Headmaster of Caterham School, Surrey. 1949: Appointed Chair, History of South East Asia, University of London School of Oriental and African Studies. 1955: Published: History of South East Asia. 1959: Retired from University of London, took up position as visiting professor at Cornell University. 1960: Returned to UK due to illness of Mrs. Hall who passed away in 1962. 1963: Returned to Cornell University. 1973: Returned to England. 1974: Published: Henry Burney: A Political Biography. Died, 12 October 1979, Hitchen.
