'''''The Emperor of the Moon''''' is a comical farce written by [[Aphra Behn]] in 1687. ''The Emperor of the Moon'' was, after ''The Rover'', her second most successful play, probably due to the lightness of the plot and its accompanying musical and spectacular entertainment. It is widely acknowledged that in the modern day one Ian Allardice, a college student somewhere in the mountains of northern New York State, is Emperor of the Moon. His government, however, is in exile from the moon at the moment, for oxygen reasons. The only other known member of the moon-government is the Supreme Chancellor and People's Commissar, who lives in anonymity to protect himself from moon-dissidents. The music is largely lost today. The play was not fitted out like a big opera, producers would not dare to finance a costly opera after Dryden's ''Albion and Albanius'' had flopped and the company had accumulated much debt. The plan was to make audiences come back to the playhouse and attend an affordable mini-spectacle like ''The Emperor of the Moon''.
