Halbbrüder (literally meaning half-brothers in German) or Ordensdiener (literally meaning Servants of the Order) or Sariantbrüder were troops of the Teutonic Order probably destined to one day become knights (or Ritterbrüder) themselves. Halbbrüder initially wore white overcoats with black crosses and a shield with a black cross on white field and were indistinguishable from the Ritterbrüder. Later they adopted gray overcoats with a black Tau cross on the chest (a truncated form of cross resembling a 'T') but their shield design remained white with black cross.
