A timpani concerto is piece of music that is for a timpani and orchestra. The first timpani concertos were written in the Classical Period of music and several concertos in that era were written. The timpani concerto in the Romantic Period of music was ignored and none were written in that period of music. The timpani concerto was revived in the 20th century and the timpani concerto repertoire increased significantly. There are also problems with having a timpani concerto. One of the problems with having a timpani concerto is the balance with timpani and orchestra because of the lack of volume with the timpani. Another problem with a timpani concerto is the cadenzas because of the timpani being a drum is hard to hear the tune of the cadenza. Important concertos in the classical are Georg Druschetzky's concerto for six timpani and Johann Fischer's symphony for eight timpani. Important works of the Modern era are William Kraft's concerto for timpani and orchestra, Ney Rosauro's concerto for timpani and orchestra, and Philip Glass's concerto for two timpanists and orchestra. Other important works in timpani repertoire are Béla Barók's Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, and Elliott Carter's Eight Pieces for Four Timpani. More works are being written for Timpani recently due to the interest of Timpani Concertos.
