Laupersdorf has an altitude of 493 meters above sea level and lies 3 km in the west of Balsthal (capital of the district of Thal). Laupersdorf is built on the sunside at the feet of the mountain chain Brunnersberg in the hills of Jura.

Laupersdorf is one of the middle-sized municipality of the canton of Solothurn with 1679 inhabitants (2007). About 93.5 % of the inhabitants speak Swiss German (year 2000). In 1850, Laupersdorf had 720 inhabitants and increased to 862 in the year 1900. During the 20st century, the population grew continuosly till 1960. After a slight fall, the number of inhabitants made up 1396 in 1970.
