Silent Hunter V: Battle of the Atlantic is a submarine simulation for Microsoft Windows developed by Ubisoft Romania and published by Ubisoft.

Overview

Silent Hunter V takes players behind the periscope of a German Type VII U-boat to take on the Allied Forces in famous battles across the vast Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. For the first time in the history of the series, players can live the life of a submarine captain from a first-person view and lead a crew in a critical campaign that spans 1939-1943.

Announced Keyfeatures

  • Ability to walk through all of the submarine in first-person view.
  • Direct crew interaction and a simulation of the tension and fear of the crew.
  • A new objective-driven dynamic campaign mode
  • Allied ships will respond to players advances and new locations, upgrades and resupply will alter the campaign dynamically.
  • A brand-new user interface supporting a beginner mode and a mode where the player can control the whole submarine on their own.
  • Improved graphics and realism.

DRM restrictions

In January 2010, Ubisoft announced the Online Services Platform, which forces customers to not only authenticate on the first game launch, but to remain online continually while playing, with the game even pausing if network connection is lost. This makes it impossible to play the game offline, to resell it, and means that should Ubisoft's servers go down, the game will be unplayable. [1]

It has been confirmed that Silent Hunter V will use this DRM solution. [2]

Within 24 hours of the game release, pirated copies have turned up on torrent and newsgroups sites with the activation disabled but not fully removed, allowing users to copy and play only a demo of the game without requiring to have an active internet connection as well as being able to play online. [3]

Reception

Response to the DRM amongst the SubSim.com fanbase (an online simulation gaming community) has been generally negative; with unofficial polls showing approximately 75-84% of users may be unwilling to purchase the game given the DRM [2]. Generally cited arguments against DRM include users without broadband; shoddy internet connections, capped internet bandwidth resulting in overage charges and fear that the service will be unreliable, harming the user.[3] Only a minority of contributors to the forum still intend to purchase the game regardless of DRM.

All but one review on Amazon have given the game one star, the lowest possible rating. They blame not only the choice of DRM, but the incomplete state of the game.

Response

Ubisoft released a statement on the 4th of March stating that they believe the pirated version of Silent Hunter 5 has not been cracked and the version that has been released is incomplete. [4] However, users who have downloaded the program and installed the crack provided have confirmed that this is incorrect, the pirate version appears to be a full working copy of the game, with the DRM stripped away.

According to the hacking team who broke the game, the DRM was deactivated by creating a patch that simply "turned off" the DRM on the server. The code was placed in the DRM by ubisoft in the event that the Silent Hunter DRM servers would be taken offline in the future. The hacking group responsible reiterate that the game is a complete and fully functional copy. [5]
