Kochi IPL team is one of the latest franchisee to 2011 Indian Premiere League (IPL) along with Pune team. The franchisee is owned by [Rendezvous Sports World (RSW)], which is a consortium of multiple companies.


Origin

The cities in the fray for auction on March 22, 2010 were Pune, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur, Dharamsala, Vizag, Rajkot, Cuttack, Baroda, Kochi, Indore and Gwalior. Two new teams were selected out of 12 teams, which bid for 2011 IPL matches. Sahara group made highest bid in the auction and selected Pune team for Rs.1,702 crores. Rendezvous Sports World made second highest bid of Rs.1533.32 crores. The two new franchises were sold for an amount which, when combined, is bigger than the worth of the original eight franchises put together.

Ownership

As per the relevations of Lalit Modi, IPL Commissioner Kochi IPL team is owned by the following stakeholders

  • Parinee (26%)
  • Film waves combine (12%)
  • Anand Shyam (8%)
  • Vivek Venugopal (1%)
  • Rendezvous (1%)

The remaining 25 % free shares belonging to Rendezvous is held by

  • Pushpa Gaikwad- Mother of Shailendra Gaikwad
  • Kisan Rao Gaikwad- Father of Shailendra Gaikwad

Venue

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA)have started construction of the new world class international stadium at Edakochi, an area which lies in west Kochi. The capacity of stadium is said to be 50,000. Kochi currently have Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium which have hosted several ODI's. The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium at Kochi is not under KCA. Hence KCA plans to take the stadium on lease and modify the entire ground to equip IPL matches. If this is done Kochi can host its home matches at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, until the new stadium exclusively by KCA is ready by 2012.

Trivia

  • Upon entry of Kochi into IPL, all the states in South India has their own IPL team.
  • It is said that Kerala government is planning to build a stadium in Thiruvananthapuram too. Hence Kochi IPL matches can also be held at the Kerala capital.
