Richard Nelson "Oz" Griebel, born June 21, 1949, is a business leader and a Republican candidate in the 2010 Connecticut gubernatorial race from Simsbury, CT. He is currently on leave from his position as CEO of the MetroHartford Alliance as he pursues the Republican nomination for governor.
Professional
Oz began his career as a teacher and coach at Worcester Academy. Then, during the throes of Connecticut’s real estate crash of the late 80s and early 90s, Oz accepted the position of CEO at BankBoston Connecticut, which he held from 1993 to 1999, restoring the reputation and prosperity of the company. Since 2001, Oz has served as President and CEO of the MetroHartford Alliance, leading the economic development efforts of Greater Hartford. His corporate board experience includes service with MacDermid, Inc., Tallan, Inc., and World Business Capital. Griebel was named both the Hartford Courant (1995) and Hartford Business Journal’s (2001) “Business Person of the Year.”
Political Career
Griebel announced his candidacy for governor on January 28, 2010. He has since met with thousands of Republican activists and participated in several debates and forums. His campaign's first television commercial began airing on April 23, 2010.
Education
Oz graduated from Dartmouth College (1971) where he studied English and played two years of football and four years of baseball. Oz also earned his JD from Suffolk University (1977). Oz served as class officer and co-captain of his high school football and basketball teams, and as a member of the 1970 Dartmouth baseball team that represented New England in the College World Series.
Civic Partcipation
Both Oz and his wife have been involved in a range of religious, educational, and youth organizations. He served on the boards of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, Bradley International Airport, the Connecticut Transportation Strategy Board, Riverfront Recapture, Northwest Catholic High School, Junior Achievement of Central Connecticut, the Annual Fund of the United Way of the Central Naugatuck Valley, the Mark Twain House, the University of Hartford, the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the Waterbury Foundation, and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Personal
Oz and his wife Kirsten live in Simsbury and have three grown children: Stephanie, Paul, and Chris.
