The American International School (AIS) in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, was formed in 2007 as the third school, after APUIS and SSIS, providing American education in Vietnam.[1] As of 2009, it enrolled roughly 900 students in grades K-12.[2] Among the school's staff are five Vietnamese American teachers.[1] In 2010, all of the official high school teachers are foreigners, a few of middle school teachers are Chinese-Vietnamese, teaching Mandarin. MOET requires every international school in Vietnam to teach Vietnamese Literature, Geography and Histroy, therefore, there are some part-time Vietnamese teachers at AIS.

Curriculum

AIS uses English as the medium of instruction. It offers Advanced Placement courses.[2] The school follows the theory of multiple intelligences in developing its curriculum and teaching plans. Since 2006, they have had a partnership with Spectrum Community School in the US state of Maryland, in which staff from each school have visited the other, and students engage in joint blogging and video projects. Due to censorship in Vietnam, teaching materials often have to be smuggled in by hand to avoid problems with customs.[3]

Ownership and finances

Intellectual Resources Management Co., which owns the school, is also the owner of the Saigon Institute of Technology (SaigonTech).[2] AIS operates campuses in Bình Thạnh district, District 1 and District 10, with construction proceeding on a third VND1.5 trillion (US$90 million) campus in Nhà Bè district. The annual tuition fee ranges from US$7,800 to US$11,000.[2]

Many Vietnamese students and parents say that AIS is a "for-profit" school, comparing to Saigon South International School, SSIS. However, they appreciate its acceptable quality of education and training.
