Florrie

Florrie is a British singer, songwriter and drummer. Closely associated with the Xenomania production house, since joining as their in-house drummer in 2008 she has played live and on record for popular artists such as Girls Aloud and the Pet Shop Boys. In 2010, she began a solo career. She has drawn positive reaction from the online music community for releasing her own material in collaboration with remixers such as Fred Falke for download without charge. Several commentators have called Florrie a rising-star to watch.[1][2][3]

Early life and career

Florrie was born in Bristol and took up playing the drums when she was in Greece on a family holiday aged six. As a teenager she played in bands in her home town, eventually moving to London. A meeting with the manager of Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi led Florrie to successfully audition as the drummer in the houseband of Xenomania, the widely successful Kent-based production house.[4]

Emergence as a solo artist

Alongside playing on tracks by many of the acts that Xenomania worked with, Florrie developed her songwriting and production talents. With encouragement from Brian Higgins in the process of recording and singing her own demos, by 2010 Florrie honed in on the sound she wanted.[5] "It’s going to be a big mixture: Kind of a sixties, organic feel merged with modern pop beats and electronics" she told Ponystep.[6]

Reaction

The first mix released of Call 911 reportedly had over one thousand downloads around the world after only a few days .[7]

Panic Attack (Fred Falke remix) became the eighth most downloaded track for March on music site Big Stereo.

Music bloggers Death Electro, Sundtrak, Arjan Writes and PopJustice all praised the quality of the music, noted the free availability of the tracks, and expressed interest for future material.

Others have identified how the awareness of Florrie's music has been assisted by online social networks and a grass-roots strategy. [8] "I think it’s really important to have that contact with fans and for them to be able to buy into your world or you as a person without any pressure from a corporation", says Florrie. "It’s a better way of doing it because people can feel like they discovered you as opposed to a major label. I want my fans to feel like they have some sort of ownership."[6]
