The school was built in 1971, and extensive renovations were done in 1993. One of the highlights of those renovations was the construction of a large library media center, with skylights, in the middle of the building. The first principl of the school was Dr. Tassak. Schaghticoke Middle School originally was for students in Grades 6-8, but since the opening of Sarah Noble Intermediate School, it now contains just grades 7 and 8. The enrollment for the 2009-10 school year was 782 students, virtually evenly split between the two grades.

There are a total of five fields on the school’s grounds. including a lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, baseball, and softball field. Each one is used regularly by school teams, and town teams. There are also two tennis courts, now used as basketball courts. There are also two inside facilities used for sports: the gym and multipurpose room. The school has a total of 119 rooms. Some of the most important are the school’s library media center, and the three computer labs. The Library Media Center has 19 computers. The Practical Arts room and the Industrial Arts room are also two of the most important rooms in the school. The Practical Arts room has a total of five ovens, a washer and dryer, five microwaves, and six sinks. The sewing side of the Practical Arts room has seventeen working sewing machines for the use of students. There is a large cafeteria in the center of the school that houses four lunches each day. In each lunch wave, about two hundred students gather to eat. Overall, Schaghticoke Middle School has a fairly large campus, and many important rooms.

Schaghticoke offers Math, Science, English, Social Studies, World Language, Reading, Band, Chorus, Industrial Arts, Practical Arts, Gym, Art, Health and Music.
For Math they offer 7th and 8th grade Basic Skills, 7 Math, 7th and 8th grade Pre-Algebra, 7th and 8th grade honors Algebra, and 8th grade Geometry. There are eight Math teachers in Schaghticoke, one for each team.
For Science, there is 7th grade life science and 8th grade physical science. There are eight science teachers.
For English, they teach 7th grade English and 8th grade English. There are eight English teachers.
For Social Studies, they teach 7th grade World History and 8th grade Civics. There are eight Social Studies teachers.
For World Language, Spanish, French, and German are taught. There is one French teacher, one German teacher, and four Spanish teachers.
They teach Reading, and there are 3 teachers for this class.
Band is an option. There is one teacher!
For Chorus there is one teacher.
For Industrial Arts, they teach Wood Shop and Metal Shop. There is one teacher for each.
