Orbea is a bicycle manufacturer in Mallabia in the Basque Country of Spain. Founded in 1840 as a rifle and gun producer, the company diversified in the 1930s to begin producing bicycles. Orbea is part of the Mondragón Cooperative Corporation and is Spain's largest bicycle manufacturer. Orbea designs their bicycles, and produces tooling in Spain, while the frames are manufactured in Asia, then the raw frames are sent to Spain for finishing, allowing them to be labeled as made in Spain, based on the value added rules of origin. [1]
Orbea sponsors and supplies bikes to teams, including the Basque-based Euskaltel-Euskadi professional team and the U.S.-based Herring Gas Cycling Team[1]. Spanish rider Samuel Sánchez rode an Orbea Orca Carbon to win the road race at the Beijing Olympics and Julien Absalon won the mountain bike gold on an Orbea Alma.
