Skytone

Skytone is an independent Canadian Indie/Alternative/Pop band formed in Ottawa, Ontario in 2003. Brothers Rodney and Darius Doddridge both sing and play a variety of instruments on their albums. Rodney plays guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and percussion. Darius plays guitar, bass, keyboard, percussion, mandolin, accordion and some drums. Mark Dojczman makes contributions on violin and classical guitar. Recording and mixing is done in their own studios and albums are produced by Rodney Doddridge. Influences for Skytone come from a wide range of bands, albums and producers. They site King Tubby, Augustus Pablo, [[Lee Scratch Perry]], The Skatalites, The Sandals, Factory Records Compilations for their recording and production techniques and the pet sounds era Beach Boys for their harmonies. The Television Personalities inpired the fuzz pop psychedelia on songs such as We Are One. Taking the Long Way Home touches on AM radio 70's production with the instrumentation influenced by The Smiths song Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. For songs like Rolling Stone influences are early Joe Jackson Look Sharp era, and Sha Na Na. Shadow across my door was written after Rodney watched a documentary featuring Yiddish folk music.

History

Rodney and Darius Doddridge grew up playing music together. Over time, they developed a catalogue of songs that they co-wrote. Naturally, they wanted to record all of these pop gems.

The result was their debut album "Pat's Ugly Yellow Dress" (1996), recorded under the band name Garrison Finish. The Doddridges were joined by drummer Steve "Chunkk" Neilson. A second album followed, "Inside These Four Walls" (1998) under new band name The Mudpouts. Neilson left the band, later joining Nick Danger and the Danger City Rebels.

The Doddridge brothers decided to change their name to Tremolo. In July of 2002, they won a local battle of the bands at Ottawa's Gloucester Fair. Later that year, they released the 4-song ep "All My Friends" which launched Wally Salem's fledgeling Ottawa-based label The Beautiful Music. This time they were joined by bassist Terry O'Reilly and drummer Nolan Rawlings. Both Rawlings and O'Reilly parted ways with the band. Terry O'Reilly, like Steve Neilson, eventually joined Nick Danger and the Danger City Rebels, also on the TBM label.

Skytone

In 2003 the brothers decided to perform as a duo, changing their name to Skytone. They released the album "Echoes In All Directions" in 2005. Album tracks "Lindbergh", "The New York Song" and "Just a Little Attention" have proven popular on campus radio charts. They have also appeared on CBC Radio 3.

In the spring of 2008, Skytone won the regional final of the Canadian Radio Star National Songwriting Competition for the song "String of Pearls".

In late 2008 they began recording a new album, tentatively titled Light and Shade. After a year and a half of fine tuning and re-recording, the album, titled Shining Over You was released through iTunes Canada on July 20, 2010.
