Tucker Middle School is the only public Middle School in Tucker, DeKalb County, Georgia,United States and is operated by the DeKalb County School System[1]. Tucker Middle has about 1100 students, about 800 of which are African American[2].

Origins

Mission Statement

"The mission of Tucker Middle School is to develop independent thinkers who are conscientious, compassionate, and embrace the diversity of the world around them. The challenging and rigorous educational program compels students to read with comprehension, write with clarity, and use information to solve problems."[3]

Curriculum

Tucker Middle School has four main subjects, as with most schools, which are Math, Science, Language Arts (English), and Social Studies. All of these classes are taught in three levels of academic expertise. These levels are Average, High Achiever, adn Gifted. Tucker Middle School also offers advanced courses in mathematics. TMS also offers a variety of exploratory classes. "[4]

Tucker Middle offers a variety of exploratory classes"[5]. These classes are Business Education"[6] , Technology Education - Robotics, Family and Consumer Science, ESOL"[7], French"[8], Spanish, German, Art"[9], Math Tools"[10], and Reading tools"[11].

Athletics

Tucker Middle School offers a variety in sports for girls and boys. Some of the most predominant sports teams in the school are Football, boys and girls Basketball,and Cheerleading. These 3 programs show greatness and overall improvement. The Tucker Tigers football team is coached by Michael Gembala, as well as Jermaine Walker, Stanley Hudson, and Roderick Russell.[12] The Cheerleading Squad is coached by Jacqueline Hunte [13]

Music

The Tucker Middle School Music family consists of Band.[14], Orchestra, and Chorus. The Band is led by Lawrence Jennings, the Orchestra by Min Kang, and the Chorus by Karen Bailey-Summers. The Band is split into four main ensembles. These are Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Pep Band, and Jazz Band. The Orchestra is led by Min Kang, who began directing on the start of the 2010-2011 school year, leaving her previous occupation of Assistant Band Director. The Chorus is led by Karen Bailey-Summers[15], and preforms a variety of musicals such as Alice and Wonderland.

Foreign Language

TMS teaches three foreign languages. These are French, Spanish, and German. French is taught by Susanna Miller"[16], Spanish by Adrienne Schmidt and Gianna Brown. German is taught by Paulina Behnk.


International Baccalaureate

TMS is currently a candidate of being accepted as an International Baccalaureate school. Coordinating this movement is Ruth Mason[17], a teacher at TMS. They are part of the Dekalb County School System IB movement[18].

Awards & Recognitions

Tucker Middle School has won a variety of awards in Band, Science Fair, Robotics, Reading Bowl, Orchestra, and more. Here is a list of their accomplishments[19]

2008-2009 Academic Year Reading Bowl 2nd Place at county, 3rd Place at regionals Robotics Team - 1st place Teamwork; 2nd place Technical Presentation; 3rd in Project Connect, International Competition; representative at the State Robotics Competition. Social Studies Fair - Lucy B., Gracie W.,Forrest L., Gabrielle G. to county Science Fair Project went to state level - Avery P. Eleven students received awards for their science fair projects submitted to the Dekalb County Science Fair. The awards ranged from Honorable Mention to 1st place in each science category. Spelling Bee - Amanuel K. GMEA District Honor Chorus - 17 students; National Honor Chorus - 5 students; Tucker Middle Singers performed at the Board Scholars Awards Program DeKalb County Recorders Court Art and Essay Contest - Emily B. 1st place; 2nd place; Isis J. - honorable mention. Isis J. has won a trip to Istanbul, Turkey with Ms. Libbey, art teacher. Isis entered the Istanbul Center’s annual art and essay contest for middle school and high school students. The theme “Alliance of Civilizations” drew more than 1,000 entries from 110 Georgia schools. Isis’ artistic entry was a drawing of a woman whose face was a composite of several cultures; and the woman was holding the world in her hand. Scholastic Art Competition - Isis J. - 2 golds, 1 silver; AD B. - silver; Nejr M. - honorable mention; The only middle school to win awards in this competition TMS Stepping Divas - 3rd place Cedar Grove Middle Competition Board Scholars - Anna D., Andrew M., Nejra M., Phuong T. Pennies for Patients raised almost $2000 benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, sponsored by the Student Council Canned Food Drive benefited the Tucker Food Pantry and fed over 300 families during the holiday season, sponsored by the FCCLA and Student Council 2005-2006 Academic Year Band—Both 7th and 8th Grade Band Receive Excellent Rating Business Education-Jeffrey Bernardin honored as Outstanding Business Education Student Oratory Competition—Jaiterra Richards,1st Place held at the Gallery at South DeKalb Mall in February, 2006. Orchestra—2005-2006 Received a Superior Rating and Awarded Blue Ribbon Medals from the Georgia Music Educators Association in the Large Group Performance Evaluation Festival Reflections—County Level: Donovan Trumpet, Leslye Fuller Social Studies Fair-Cailey Forstall and Teferi Taylor competed in the Regional Social Studies Fair Robotics Team- 1st Place 2004-2005 Academic Year 2004 Reading Bowl—4th Place 2005 Reading Bowl—2nd Place
