Overview

Charlie Zeleny

History

Charlie Zeleny is a New York City session drummer, music director, producer, and band leader hailing originally from New Jersey. Born September, 1981 Charlie first entered the world of drumming through grammar school concert band when he was just 8 years old [1]. After taking jazz band and countless music courses in middle & high school, Charlie graduated and moved on to Drew University, where he naturally studied music. In addition to just studying, Charlie was the founder and head of Drew's jazz music department for 3 years of higher education. During the course of his studies, Charlie had the privilege to study under Tommy Igoe, Nick Schebule and Joe Bergamini before being accepted to graduate school for jazz drum set performance at New York University. He did not attend but instead decided to become a professional musician[2].

Professional Music Career

Since becoming involved in the music scene, Charlie Zeleny has played 39 US states, and in 19 countries while working with countless musicians in numerous projects, each with a unique variety of style[3]. Unsatisfied to be contained by one stereotype, Charlie has learned to play a variety of genres including Pop, Rock, Jazz, Fusion, Progressive Metal, Hiphop, Funk and R&B[4]. In playing such a variety of style, Charlie has been able to perform with such acts as Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess, as well as classical violin guitarist The Great Kat[1]. In addition, he has also performed double drums with master drummer Terry Bozzio for The Drum Channel[3]. He has opened for such nationally acclaimed acts as Bowling for Soup, The Blue Oyster Cult, Akon, Between the Buried and Me and Bon Jovi in Puerto Rico[5]

In addition to his work as a session drummer, Charlie was an original member of the group Behold...The Arctopus as well as internationally acclaimed band Blotted Science, featuring Ron Jarzombek of Spastic Ink and Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse[5].

In one of his most current projects, Charlie not only drums for, but is the bandleader, and music director for the large group, NYC-based Latin Band Cracked Latin, featuring such known musicians[6] as:

In his non-studio career, Charlie has played such high scale venues as Irving Plaza[7], Lincoln Center[8], Iridium Jazz Club, and a New York Jet's half time show with the Broadway act Rock Of Ages at Giant's Stadium. He has been featured in Blender Magazine as "One of the Best Drummers Of All Time"[9].

Charlie's official YouTube page has hit over 1,200 subscribers, and has achieved 600,000 plus views since being established, offering live performances as well as drum training videos for those willing to learn.[3]
