CAT-iq “Cordless Advanced Technology—internet and quality” is a technology made to bring together broadband internet and telephony. This convergence is also part of the "fixed mobile convergence" , or FMC.
History
CAT-iq was created by DECT forum, and allows standard cordless DECT phones to be used for VoIP and other Internet-based services such as streaming audio and video.
Extending DECT phone cordless technology that is used today, CAT-iq is the enhancement of DECT technology, promoting the standard to work with new emerging technologies. The CAT-iq standard defines protocols for the integration of Internet and telephony.
Availability
According to the DECT forum, the first production of CAT-iq CPEs will be around mid-2008, introduced as time goes by [1].
- Wideband voice, with basic interoperability — For inexpensive phones.
- Data and audio streaming — Products designed to stream data and audio.
- Wideband voice, with extra interoperability — Cordless phones with many more features.
- Intelligent internet products will have auto-configuration functions to make installation and maintenance easy.
Technology
The claims[1] of the DECT forum for the new technology are:
- Advanced voice quality – With the mix of telephony and internet products, CAT-iq will have much better voice quality. CAT-iq will also support audio streaming.
- New features – The technology will allow inter-product operability. New functions such as phone directory searching and RSS and internet with web 2.0 content will be able to view.
- Home gateways – CAT-iq products will require certification to guarantee interoperability.
- DECT standard – CAT-iq's base is the DECT standard.
CAT-iq vs. WLAN
CAT-iq will not compete with WLAN products. Instead it is a complementary technology. This will be true until all home features are integrated in a single gateway.
