DECT Forum introduced the CAT-iq Certification Program in 2010

CAT-iq stands for Cordless Advanced Technology—internet and quality and is a global technology initiative from the DECT Forum.

Background

CAT-iq was designed for IP voice services in the next generation networks and is based on the regulatory framework of the DECT technology standard.
CAT-iq is fully backward compatible to DECT GAP and focuses on high quality wideband VoIP as well as low bit-rate data applications.
CAT-iq is a registered trademark (word and picture mark) in 47 countries worldwide.

CAT-iq Profile Overview

The CAT-iq profiles are split between voice and data service:
With CAT-iq 1.0 and CAT-iq 2.0 providing features to support key voice enhancements,
and CAT-iq 3.0 and CAT-iq 4.0 providing features to support data.

Within the voice profiles, the revisions are sequential, starting with CAT-iq 1.0 that provides basic wideband voice.
Then CAT-iq 2.0, which supersedes and includes CAT-iq wideband voice service, providing additional voice related service.
Similarly CAT-iq 2.1 will supersede and emcompass CAT-iq 2.0 (should CAT-iq 2.2. or 2.3 profiles be created in the future the principle will be the same).

Interoperability

The claims of the DECT forum for the new technology are:

  • Advanced voice quality – With the mix of telephony and internet products, CAT-iq will have much better voice quality. CAT-iq will also support audio streaming.
  • New features – The technology will allow inter-product operability. New functions such as phone directory searching and RSS and internet with web 2.0 content will be able to view.
  • Home gateways – CAT-iq products will require certification to guarantee interoperability.
  • DECT standard – CAT-iq's base is the DECT standard.

Certification Program

CAT-iq will not compete with WLAN products. Instead it is a complementary technology. This will be true until all home features are integrated in a single gateway.
