Danny J. Liedka is the current mayor of East Syracuse, New York and is seeking the Republican nomination to be the state senator representing the New York 49th District.[1]

Liedka was first elected to the Village of East Syracuse Board as a Trustee in 2003, and was reelected in 2005. In 2007, he was elected Mayor after securing the backing of the two non-partisan parties within the Village. He also works as a sales manager for DoubleTree Hotel in Syracuse and as a sports broadcaster for Time Warner Cable SportsNet, The NHL Network, and ESPN 360. [citation needed]

Campaign for State Senate seat

In 2010, Liedka was a candidate for the Republican nomination to oppose incumbent Democratic State Senator David Valesky in the 49th Senate District, which encompasses all of Madison County and parts of Onondaga Cayuga County and Oneida Counties. His principal opponent for the nomination was LeMoyne College "Artist in Residence" Andrew Russo. Despite Russo's lack of experience in politics and government – extending so far as never having voted previously – entrenched party interests in Albany endorsed Russo, who went on to win the nomination before losing the general election. Liedka largely based his campaign on both his experience as a Village Board member and the remarkably stable property tax rate during his tenure as Mayor.

Village government career

Danny Liedka has been involved in the government of East Syracuse since 2003 as a trustee until elected mayor in 2007. The Village Board has passed four budgets since 2003 that have contained tax increases.[2][3][4] Trustee Liedka called the 2006 property tax increase of 5% "money well spent."[5]

Under Mayor Liedka's leadership, the Village of East Syracuse passed laws combating loitering teens and disorderly tenants. The ACLU objected to both laws and sought to reach a compromise with the Village,[6] but, after further review, the Village found that the changes weren't in the best interest of the community.[7] While the Village of Baldwinsville was considering a similar Rental Law, DeWitt Conservative Party Chairman Bernard Ment expressed concerns that the East Syracuse law treats "renters and landlords alike as second-class citizens." [8] Mayor Liedka disputes Chairman Ment's claims and asserts there have only been three complaints regarding the law in three years.[9] Ment maintains that the law is "excessively invasive to tenants".[10]
