==Formation==

A Common Year formed in the summer of 2008 as a product of years of collaboration between Casey Baksa (guitar/vocals) and Coleman Bright (guitar/vocals). The original lineup included Baksa, Bright, Carl Smith (bass) and Jacob Bergman (drums). After Smith left the band in the fall of 2009 to attend school in Tennessee, Matt Ritter joined, filling out the current lineup.

After forming late in the summer of 2008, the band began the process of writing for their debut release. After spending several months spread between [[Indiana University]] and [[Purdue University]], the group reunited in the summer to begin recording what would become its first album. Tracking began in May 2009, while the band used Baksa's grandmother's house as a makeshift studio. After writing and recording the majority of ''Between Cities'' during the summer, the band returned to school, and finished recording throughout the fall at Purdue, where Bright mixed and mastered the record on his own. ''Between Cities'' was released digitally, for free on January 27, 2010, and marked A Common Year's first publicly released material.
