About 1960, Gilmore's husband, Mervyn Peake, began working on his fourth novel in the [[Gormenghast]] series, following ''[[Titus Groan (novel)|Titus Groan]]'', ''[[Gormenghast (novel)|Gormenghast]]'', and ''[[Titus Alone]]'', which was published in 1959. This fourth in the series was given the editorial title of ''[[Titus Awakes]]''. In the late 1950s, while writing ''Titus Alone'', Peake's health began to decline. Maeve Patricia Mary Theresa Gilmore, known professionally as Maeve Gilmore (1917 – 3 August 1983) was a British painter, sculptor, and writer.
