Russell worked for an insurance company and Coca Cola among other roles before beginning her broadcasting career at York Hospital Radio. She later moved onto hosting weekend shows at [[Stray FM]] in Harrogate and a full time presenting role at York's [[Minster FM]].


Russell spent over ten years co-presenting [[Trent FM]]'s award-winning Breakfast Show with Andy "Twiggy" Twigge, who had previously worked alongside her at a local station in Derby. In September 2008, she joined [[Absolute Radio]] as the host of a weekend mid-morning show, which ran for around thirteen months.

A month after her departure from Absolute, Russell joined [[BRMB]] to host its flagship weekday breakfast show ''The Jo Show''. In November 2010, following a break from work due to illness, she began presenting the station's weekday drivetime show, alongside producer Mark "Sparky" Colerangle.

Following her 2010 Sony Nomination for her time at Absolute Radio, Russell is now the most nominated female in the history of the awards.

Jo’s arrival is yet another plank in our strategy to restore BRMB to its former glory as one of the UK’s most entertaining radio stations’.

She has not ruled out a duet with Michael Buble at some point in her career, and will also join Lady Gaga on her Fame Monster Ball Tour as a backing dancer and teacup holder should she require one.

Jo now presents Drivetime with Sparky after a bout of illness. BRMB weekdays, 4 - 7pm and also Back to the 80's on BRMB's sister station Gem 106.
