Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited

Mitre 10 is the biggest and best known network of home improvement stores in New Zealand. Mitre 10 has been a household name in New Zealand since 1974 when it was introduced by 15 hardware retailers who`d watched the success of Mitre 10 in Australia. Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited is a co-operative, which means stores are owned and run by owner operators – so the people that make all the decisions are also the people on the front line listening to customers, and it means purchases in stores are building business in their communities. Mitre 10 is New Zealand owned and operated and is a totally separate company from the Australian Mitre 10.[1]

In 2008 Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited was named the number 1 most trusted retail brand in New Zealand by the New Zealand edition of Reader's Digest, and 20th overall.[2] Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited then won again in 2010 as the Reader's Digest Most Trusted Brand - Home Improvements.[3]

History

After initial early discussions in Auckland, Mitre 10 New Zealand was established on 20 June 1974. In March 2010, as Mitre 10 Australia was going through the Metcash purchase, there was a structural change in the holding company which owned the Mitre 10 brand for both Australia and New Zealand. Mitre 10 New Zealand chose to purchase the Mitre 10 brand for New Zealand thereby securing the brand's future in New Zealand. They felt it was time New Zealanders, too, were offered the cost savings achieved when retailers could pool their orders, buy in bulk and promote nationally.[4]

Now there are over 100 stores throughout New Zealand operating under the Mitre 10 banner. Over the years Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited has won awards for excellence in marketing and retailing and been ranked among top international business performers.

Stores

In February 2004 Mitre 10 New Zealand Limited opened its first Mitre 10 MEGA store in Hastings, after years of research into U.S home improvement retailers Lowes and The Home Depot.[5] Mitre 10 is growing this part of the group by constructing new stores in key strategic growth areas of New Zealand.[6] As of March 2011 there were 28 Mitre 10 Mega stores open in New Zealand.

The Mitre 10 MEGA store offers customers an increased product range and extra services like cafes and kids play areas along with larger garden centres and drive throughs. Mitre 10 MEGA stores have been very successful as more kiwis are investing money back into their homes and are choosing to do home improvements. Both DIY and trade/business customers have been keen to take advantage of the wide MEGA offer.[7]

Mitre 10 MEGA stores are predominantly owner operated, however on occasion there is some funding support from the national body. That means that when you shop at Mitre 10 MEGA, as well as lowest prices and the best range, you are supporting a local business.
