West Boca Raton Community High School is a public high school in an unincorporated area west of Boca Raton, Florida. The school is part of the School District of Palm Beach County and is zoned for the far western area of Boca Raton, with students from any part of the Palm Beach County School District able to enroll if they are accepted into at least one academy. Its curriculum includes a set of magnet programs, or academies, available to all students who qualify. Academies offered at West Boca High include Medical Science, Information Technology, Drafting and Design, and Culinary Arts.
Academies
West Boca Raton High has four academies which include: Medical Science, Information Technology, Drafting and Design, and Culinary Arts.
Medical Science
The Medical Science Academy is split into two sub-academies: Forensic Chemistry and Sports Medicine. The head of the medical sciences academy is Ms. Laura Comas. In addition to Ms. Comas, Ms. Yvette Scherer, Dr. Jennifer Kalish, and Ms. Stiepleman are teachers in the academy.
Information Technology
The Information Technology academy has five different sub-academies: Accounting Applications, Business and Entrepreneurial Principles, PC Support, Networking, and Web Design. All students who go into Information Technology must first take the Introduction to Information Technology course. The head of the information technology academy is Mr. Bantang. Other instructors include Mr. Graulich, Mr. Romer, and Mrs. Fish (Who is also head coach of the swim team). Additionally, all students in the IT Academy, although not required, are urged to join West Boca FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). FBLA prepares students for the business world in many ways. Each year all FBLA members are invited to attend "Fall Rally," which is a meeting of everyone in FBLA from the school district (District XX). Here students will attend workshops and a professional business luncheon.[4]
Drafting and Design
The Drafting and Design Academy, like Medical Sciences, is split into two sub-academies: Drafting and Design Technology and Communications Technology. The head of the drafting and design academy is Mr. Smith.[5]
Culinary Arts
The Culinary Academy in West Boca has a kitchen which has been used as a "model culinary kitchen" for all schools. The kitchen has many tools used in professional restaurants, including industrial dishwashers and ovens. The academy only requires three years of completion; however graduating with three years instead of four does not get a student the same recognition as someone who fully completed four years. The head of the culinary academy is Chef Hall. Chef Suarez and Chef Pearson are also instructors in the Culinary Arts Academy. The students learn the ins and outs of cooking, they learn how to apply for jobs, interviews, their way around the kitchen, and the history of culinary.[6]
Sports
Coah Willie Dodaro is the Head Football Coach. Coach Dodaro has been the head football coach since the school opened and has produced winning records in every year other than the first year, when the school did not have a senior class. There are other athletics including: Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball and Track & Field.
School rating
West Boca High earned an "A" rating from the State of Florida Department of Education for each of its first two school years. In 2006, the then-school principal Francis P. Giblin received a commendation from state Governor Jeb Bush and Commissioner of Education John Winn, honoring the school as one of the top fifty high-performing high schools in the state of Florida.
2006–2007
Despite having previously earned "A" ratings, during the 2006–2007 school year West Boca High earned a "B" from the State of Florida Department of Education.[7]
2007–2008
The school received an "A" rating for the 2007–2008 school year.[8]
2008–2009
West Boca High received an "A" rating for the 2008–2009 school year. This grade was met with 64% of students getting high standards in reading, 91% in Math, 93% in Writing, and 60% in Science.[9]
Student schedule
The school follows a block schedule composed of three alternating types of days. Students go to their fifth-hour class every day and attend their even classes on "even" days, odd classes on "odd" days and each of their seven classes on "regular" days. Classes begin at 7:30 AM and end at 2:50 PM. Once about every two weeks the school has a late start day, where students arrive at 10:30 AM.
Teachers
West Boca Raton High has 19 students per teacher, which is higher than the state average. Most faculty members have an average of 9 years experience in teaching.[10]
