== Overview ==
The school was named in honor of General Phineas Banning who was one of the founders of Wilmington in the late 1800s. Originally known as Wilmington High School, it was located at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Avalon Boulevard.

A new building was built in 1975 to replace the 'old' red ivy covered brick building, which was damaged during the [[1971 San Fernando earthquake|1971 Sylmar eqrthquake]] and was a landmark in Wilmington for many years. A new gym and a swimming pool were added to the campus.
