Louis Pizitz Middle School is a middle school, part of the Vestavia Hills City Schools school district, located in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, USA. The school educates in grades 6-8 and the 2007-08 enrollment was 1,248 students.[1] The principal is David Miles. The motto of the school is 'The Best Middle School in America'. [citation needed]
History
In the early 1930s, Louis Pizitz, founder and owner of Pizitz Department Stores, built his home 'Happy Dale' off of Montgomery Highway. After his death, his son and heir deeded the city several acres from the large land estate. Responding to school needs, the city offered part of this property to the Jefferson County School Board, and in 1968 a school was built for 7th and 8th graders - today known as Louis Pizitz Middle School.[citation needed]
Achievements
Pizitz Middle School is accredited by the Alabama State Department of Education and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This is a Blue Ribbon school, the highest honor bestowed on a US school.[2][3] This status was awarded in 1996.[4] In the Fall 2003 Pizitz was noted as having the highest middle school S.A.T. scores for the state of Alabama. There are eleven National Board Certified teachers on the school's staff.
Music
The Pizitz Choirs, with Point of Grace singer Heather Payne, recorded the songs 'In the First Light' and 'Not That Far From Bethlehem'. Heather sang solo 'All is Well'. The band recently won three best in class awards and two grand champion awards during an Orlando music festival.
