Cartridge World claims to be the world’s fastest growing[citation needed] ink and toner refilling retailer and franchisor in the printer cartridge industry. The company refills and remanufactures inkjet and toner printer cartridges. Cartridge World has more than 1,650 franchised retail locations in 61 countries.

The company was founded in Australia, but their international headquarters were recently[when?] relocated to its North America headquarters in Emeryville, California. The company was originally called Australian Cartridge Co and was started by Bryan Stokes in 1991. He was joined several years later by Paul Wheeler who helped the company grow. In 1999 the company's name was changed to Cartridge World. In 2004 in the United States, they were growing at roughly one store per day. They currently have over 1,650 stores open worldwide.

OEM printer manufacturers, such as HP and Epson, have challenged cartridge refill industries to compete with their increasing market share. Cartridge World continued to experience "double digit" growth in store-to-store sales through-out 2009.[citation needed].

Cartridge World operates on a franchise system and doesn't require store operators to have any prior technical skills. In the US, it provides as much as 80-hours of training to new franchisees before they open their stores. Shops are typically set up in suburbs and inner-city locations close to small businesses and consumers that would prize proximity and convenience. [citation needed]

In the UK, Cartridge World has the largest financial percentage [citation needed] of the refilling industry. The first British store opened in February 2001, in Harrogate. There are now over 250 stores in the UK.

In Germany, in 2005 the company founded its subsidiary Cartridge World Deutschland GmbH. Until today it has 52 shops and franchise partners in 13 federal states. The headquarters is situated in Hattingen (Northrhine Westfalia, Germany).

As of 1 January 2010, Cartridge World opened three franchise stores in South Africa.
