Silent Talker is a computerised, non-invasive psychological profiling system for the analysis of non-verbal behaviour. It’s best known form is as a lie detector, although it is designed to classify a wide range of mental, behavioural and/or physical states. Examples of which comprise emotional traits such as stress, guilt, happiness, fear, confidence; personality traits such as introversion, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience, emotional intelligence, bullying demeanour, compliant demeanour and medical traits such as true pain and psychopathic conditions.

Silent Talker is grounded in established psychological theory of analysing non-verbal behaviour. There is a well-known method, the frame-by-frame system for detecting deceitful behaviour by filming an interview and analysing it one frame at a time to find non-verbal behavioural indicators of deception. This technique requires repeated viewing of the video to record events for a particular channel (e.g. eye blink) after which a subjective judgement is made about the recorded data by one or more expert psychologists.

Silent talker observes a large number of channels of micro-gestures simultaneously and analyses relationships between them over a time interval to come up with an objective classification of truthful or deceptive demeanour. This is achieved by analysing the incoming video using successive banks of Artificial Neural Networks which have been trained to recognise features, code them into channels and classify the behaviour.

Its distinctive features include non-invasiveness (no instruments are attached to the subject), no need for calibration with baseline truthful behaviour, high robustness to attempts to defeat the system and operation in real-time.

Conventional lie detectors measure stress, requiring a calibration level of truth-telling under stress followed by subjective judgement of an expert as to whether an increase in stress indicates a deceptive answer.

The non-verbal behaviour analysed by Silent Talker is influenced by other factors such as cognitive load (mental effort required to maintain consistency in a false cover story) and duping delight (pleasure at succeeding in deceiving others) as well as stress.

After several years of development, Silent Talker was patented internationally (PCT filed 09.10.2002, see respective countries’ patent offices for more details) and launched formally (see web links for impact/response).

Since then the inventors have published the research to the Psychology [] and Artificial Intelligence [] communities. They have also raised investment funding, ported the code to different programming languages and conducting further research.
