9GAG is a comedy website set in Hong Kong[2] and hosted in the United States. Launched in 2008[3], this website is best known for recurring use of internet memes[4]. Characters are poorly designed and are usually in black and white, which is an intentional part of the humor of 9GAG. [5].

Access

Any registered user can upload images. Once available, these images go through a vote. Once they are accepted, they go in a section called "trending". They can later go to the main page, if one gets enough positive votes. It is not necessary to register to access the site. However, to vote, access adult content, or make comments on posts, one must be registered by completing a simple form, where a user can enter their e-mail and username, or just sign in on Facebook.

Most Viewed

Due to the viral nature of the site's content[6], 9GAG is among the 500 most visited websites in the world, ranking 71st place among the most accessed by computers installed in Brazil[7] and in 28th place among the most accessed in Portugal[8]. The author Clay Shirky, in his book Cognitive Surplus: Creativity and Generosity in the Connected Age, refers to 9GAG as "a product of the cognitive surplus"[9].

Content

Images are generally photoshopped and originate from other sites. Many of them are based on existing internet memes, pop culture, and current events. Some of the most common themes are Lolcats, eCards (1950's stylzed cards with snide sexist remarks), Justin Bieber's effeminivity, Twilight, the general issue of trolling, rage comics, Chuck Testa, Philosoraptor, Pedobear, and a popularized image of an officer pepper spraying various things (a parody of the recent events at UC Davis).
