Linda Furney is a Democratic politician, who most notably served as a member of the Ohio Senate from 1987 to 2002. She represented the 11th District, which encompasses all of Toledo, Ohio, and some surrounding communities.

Life and Career

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Furney attended Bowling Green State University, where she studied education. She then taught in the Washington Local School district in Toledo. She also taught English in Rio de Janeiro for two years before returning to Ohio, teaching home economics in the Springfield Local School District.

Furney began her civic and leadership career in politics with her involvement in the National Organization for Women, serving as Ohio president. She then served on the Toledo Board of Education and Toledo City Council, being elected in 1982 and 1983 respectively.

Ohio Senate

With incumbent Marigene Valiquette opting to not run for reelection in 1986, Furney entered the race to succeed her. Facing Republican Judy Jones, Furney easily won her first term, securing over 58.8% of the vote over Jones.[1] She would win reelection easily in 1990, and again in 1994.

By 1994, Furney, now beginning a third term, was elected as minority whip by her colleagues. She would win a final term in 1998. Barred by term limits in 2002, she was forced to leave office and was succeeded by Teresa Fedor.
