Kristinia DeBarge (/[invalid input: 'icon']krɪˈstɪniə/; born March 8, 1990) is an American singer-songwriter. She first appeared on national television in 2003 as a contestant on the American Idol spin-off, American Juniors. In 2009, DeBarge signed a contract with the Island Records department Sodapop, releasing her debut album Exposed in July of the same year. The first single, "Goodbye", reached the top 20 in the US and Canada.

Life and career

Childhood and youth

DeBarge is the daughter of James DeBarge. DeBarge began singing when she was 3 years old, but did not begin to take it seriously until she was 12. When she was 12, her father took her into a recording studio. They worked until 4 A.M. recording a duet, which made her father realize that she was serious about beginning a singing career.[3]

During the summer of 2003 she was a contestant on the American Idol spin-off, American Juniors. DeBarge progressed to the semifinal round of twenty contestants. She was featured in the first group of ten semifinalists and sang the song "Reflection" from the Disney movie Mulan. However, she was not one of the five to progress from that group into the final ten.[4]

Exposed: 2009

At 14, DeBarge was introduced to Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. She worked with him for five years and, two days before her nineteenth birthday, signed to a new division of Island Def Jam Records founded by Edmonds and Jeff Burroughs called Sodapop Records. DeBarge began work on her debut album in March 2009, with the record completed in May 2009. "Goodbye" met with commercial success in the US, the single debuted at number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and later reached a peak of number 15 on the chart.[5] The single was also a success in Canada, where it reached a peak of number 15 on the Canadian Hot 100.[6] The second single, "Sabotage", was released for airplay a week before the release of her debut album, Exposed. "Sabotage" failed to chart on any chart worldwide. Her debut album, Exposed was released on July 28, 2009. Exposed received generally positive reviews from music critics, based on an aggregate score of 69/100 from Metacritic.[7] In the US, the album debuted at number 23 on the Billboard 200.[8] Worldwide, the album failed to chart anywhere it was released. DeBarge also opened up for pop singer Britney Spears, during her 2009 world tour, The Circus Starring: Britney Spears.[9] In October 2009, DeBarge confirmed that a remix of "Future Love" would be released as the third single, the remix would feature rapper Pitbull. This remixed version was released on November 2 in the UK and November 10 in the US. "Future Love" was unsuccessful commercially, becoming her second consecutive single to miss out on the Hot 100 singles chart in the US.

2009–present

In November 2009, The Wet Seal, Inc., a leading specialty retailer to young women, announced a partnership with DeBarge. The program included a collection of fashion pieces selected by DeBarge, online and offline marketing and events.

In January 2010, DeBarge received an NAACP Image Award nomination for “Outstanding New Artist.” DeBarge made an appearance in School Gyrls, which premiered on Nickelodeon in March 2010. She Sang "Goodbye" and was later seen in a limo with rapper Soulja Boy. On April 26, 2011, DeBarge stated on her Twitter account that she will make her acting debut in a comedy film called The Lot,[10] which is set to be released in 2012.[11] On November 26, 2011, DeBarge announced she is working with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds on her sophmore album.[12]
