The George Washington University sailing team is a coeducational club, soon to be varsity, sport located in Washington, D.C.

History

January 2008, the team was revived by a group of students with no boats, no coach and a limited budget. After winning the Colony Cup at William & Mary, the team gained visibility from school officials and received 6 new boats for the 2009 season. Another 2 boats were added for the 2010 season.[1] On February 10, 2012 the team was officially made a varsity sport, an upgrade from the previous status of club sport.[2]

MAISA

The team competes in and is regulated by the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association

Varsity Status

From the Department of Athletics Strategic Plan 2012-2016:
"The club sports sailing program requires a level of funding that significantly outweighs the funding necessary for other club sports to function. As such, the sailing program has operated at a level more closely resembling a varsity unit than a club program. Accordingly, the sailing club sports program will be funded and transitioned into GW’s 23rd intercollegiate sport."
