Neutrality FTW! Myers' lack of belief in the existence of a deity not particularly relevant; quote referring to Moore as a "dumbass" rather unnecessary; creating a second set of references in order to conceal 'Controversy' section rather...biased? :P |

“[Professor Keith Moore was] the first recipient of the Henry Gray/Elsevier Distinguished Educator Award, AAA’s highest award for human anatomy education. The nominator said “Keith is an individual of nearly legendary status among anatomists around the world…He has had a monumental impact on anatomical education, not only at a national but also at an international level.” The Chair of the Award Committee who presented the award said “His books were like a breath of fresh air for faculty and students alike. Structures and developmental processes were no longer viewed in isolation from practical application, things to be memorized to exceedingly fine detail, but were presented within a clinical context— that became the famous blue boxes—and taught to a level of detail useful for clinical practice—His contribution to anatomy education around the world has been profound and continuous, and will be an enduring legacy." |

Keith L. Moore (born 5 October, 1925 in Brantford, Ontario) is a professor emeritus in the division of anatomy, in the Faculty of Surgery, at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Moore is associate dean for Basic Medical Sciences in the university's Faculty of Medicine, and was Chair of Anatomy from 1976 to 1984. He is a founding member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA)[1][2][3], and was President of the AACA between 1989 and 1991.[4]
Moore has co-written (with Professor Arthur F. Dalley and Professor Anne M. R. Agur) Clinically Oriented Anatomy, an English-language anatomy textbook.[5] He also co-wrote (with Professor Anne M. R. Agur and Professor Arthur F. Dalley) Essential Clinical Anatomy.[6]
Awards
The American Association of Clinical Anatomists awarded Dr. Moore with their Honored Member Award (in 1994).[7][8] The American Association of Anatomists awarded him the Henry Gray/Elsevier Distinguished Educator Award in 2007 for human anatomy education in the anatomical sciences. [9][10][11]
Moore on Islam
Embryology in the Qur'an
Keith Moore worked with the Embryology Committee of King Abdulaziz University (Saudi Arabia) on a comparative study of the Qur’an, the Hadith and modern embryology. According to Moore the study of the Qur’an and Hadith revealed a new system for the classification of the stages of the developing embryo "based on easily understood actions and changes in shape".[12] The Embryology Committee presented and published several research papers with Moore and others co-authoring a number of papers.[13] In his paper, A Scientist’s Interpretation of References to Embryology in the Qur’an, Moore states:
Statements referring to human reproduction and development are scattered throughout the Qur'an. It is only recently that the scientific meaning of some of these verses has been appreciated fully. The long delay in interpreting these verses correctly resulted mainly from inaccurate translations and commentaries, and from a lack of awareness of scientific knowledge.[14]
He concludes:
The interpretation of the verses in the Qur'an referring to human development would not have been possible in the 7th century A.D., or even a hundred years ago. We can interpret them now because the science of modern Embryology affords us new understanding. Undoubtedly there are other verses in the Qur'an related to human development that will be understood in the future as our knowledge increases.[15]
Controversy
Moore's work on the Qur'an has aroused controversy among embryologists such as PZ Myers.[16] In 2002, Moore chose not to be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal on the subject of his work on Islam, stating that "it's been ten or eleven years since I was involved in the Qur'an."[17]
