Andrew Forde (born January 21 1987) is a Canadian engineer, musician, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is the cofounder and present COO of Sommerfeld Solutions--an applied innovation firm. In addition to this, Forde is the CEO of Sommerfeld Engineering (a branch of Sommerfeld Solutions). Forde's personal initiative, The Forde Institute, is a "non-profit global centre for research in technological innovations and their impacts on humanity." As a musician, Mr. Forde goes by the name of The Violinist. He has been awarded for both his technical skills as a violinist and for his productions as an artist. Using the idea of innovation as a fundamental guiding principle, Forde engages in the application of all his skills sets for the development of a more conscious, forward moving society[1].
In 2011, Forde graduated with a BASc in Nanotech (MSE) from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Engineering[2]. He is currently working towards a Master's Degree in Engineering Innovation at McMaster University[3].
Engineering
Though formally trained in nanotech engineering, Forde diversified his field of operations and expertise by creating Sommerfeld Solutions Inc, thereby bringing his love of engineering together with an entrepreneurial spirit. Launched in January of 2011, Sommerfeld provides innovative platforms for businesses and organizations.[4] His offshoot start-up, Sommerfeld Engineering, as a branch of Sommerfeld Solutions, operates in the areas of mining, information technology, and healthcare.[5]
Particularly on the healthcare front, Forde’s innovative solution, The Electronic Chart (TEC), has been formally supported by the Canadian Government through a funding initiative from the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario[6].
What TEC functions as is a point of care computing technology. More than being electronic patient records, this Sommerfeld technology aims to create efficiencies and remove pain points for health professionals, administration, and ultimately patients[7].
His efforts as a young entrepreneur have caught the attention of organizations like the BBPA (Black Business Professional Association)[8] and The Aroni Awards[9] and the applause of the University of Toronto[10] and McMaster University[11].
Music - The Violinist
As a musician, Andrew began at a very young age. Inspired by his father, a multi- instrumentalist, and by a performance at the New York Philharmonic, he began his formal training at the age of four. He would continue straight through his formative years, attending the acclaimed Unionville High school for the Arts, and the Canadian Royal Conservatory [12]. His training and natural affinity for the violin would gain him a place amongst a collective of young musical talents. Although his first violin was gift from his elder sister, made of rubber bands and paper plates the instruments he now plays range from the classic models to electrical versions.
Andrew moves through multiple modes of music engaging in anything from classical to contemporary. His love of the violin led him to adopt the name The Violinist under which he has released a Juno-nominated album and performed with the likes of Justin Beiber, The Weeknd, Mary J Blige, Sheryl Crow, and Sting; just to name a few. He’s also played on shows like The Jump Off 2 [13]MTV’s Unplugged and a CBC special series “The Evolution of Gospel Music”.
Both as an individual artist and as part of the collective SEF, The Violinist has gained him attention in the music world both in Canada and abroad.
Philanthropy
Above all, Andrew Forde operates with the mentality that his work and music should promote a humanitarian ideal. In 2009, he created the Andrew Forde Foundation as a non-profit humanitarian organization. The Foundation, much like its successor The Forde Institute, works to promote humanitarian ventures financially, but more importantly intellectually. He works to innovate and streamline solutions to research problems and plans, in order to enable the efficient success of individuals and initiatives[14]. He believes in helping people that first attempt to help themselves.[15]
