The team is known by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Great Britain despite athletes from the whole of the United Kingdom, including those from Northern Ireland, being eligible. As host nation Great Britain gains automatic qualification places in a number of events and is expected to compete in all 26 sport disciplines at the Games.

Team
Despite the team being made up of athletes from the whole United Kingdom they compete under the name of Great Britain, a name assigned to them by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the 1908 Summer Olympics along with the IOC country code GBR. The team is also referred to as "Team GB". Representatives of the devolved Northern Ireland government have objected to the name, which they argue creates a perception that Northern Ireland is not part of the British Olympic team, and have called for the team to be renamed as Team UK. Additionally some British overseas territories compete separately from Great Britain in the event (e.g. Bermuda). === Artistic===

Great Britain were entitled, as of right as host, to one male and one female gymnast, those being the gymnasts ranked highest in the all-around event at the World Championships.

However, as a result of qualification events, Great Britain will field a full team of five gymnasts in both the men's and women's artistic gymnastics events. As a result, Great Britain will compete in both team all-around events at the games, as well as individual events.

The women's team qualified through a top eight finish in the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The men did not succeed in replicating this feat, and the highest ranked British Gymnast in the all-around event was fourth placed Daniel Purvis. If Great Britain had failed to qualify a team at the final qualification event, he would have taken the single quota place.

In the event, Great Britain won the final qualification event ahead of France, to book a full quota of gymnasts for the 2012 Games.

The British Olympic Association have announced that the team will utilise host nation qualification places. A berth will be available in the individual competition and a further six places for the group event, but the BOA set a qualifying criterion although a place as the host nation is available automatically. The British team was required to reach a target score of 45.223 by the second day of a test event held in London in January 2011. They narrowly missed this target by that date and then surpassed the target on the third and final day of the event, leading to a dispute in which British Gymnastics argued that they should not be excluded in the Games.

On 5 March 2012, the gymnasts won their appeal, and British Gymnastics announced that the team would now be nominated for selection.
