Craig Gottlieb, (born in 1971) is a leading militaria[1] and antique dealer, writer and lecturer. He is best known for uncovering famous military artifacts, to include Adolf Hitler's desk set used to sign the 1938 Munich Pact[2], Mussolini's hat, and Hitler-owned paintings of the dicator's parents.[3]

Personal life

Of Jewish ancestry, Gottlieb, whose father was a veteran of the Pacific Theater in WWII, started collecting militaria as a boy. Prior to the early 1990's he operated a company which imported knives and he also sold plastic bags used to protect items, usually knives.

Artifacts Discovered by Gottlieb

In 2010, Gottlieb tried unsuccessfully to market the desk set allegedly used by Adolf Hitler to sign the Munich Pact of 1938. Allegedly procured from Hitler's Munich office by 2nd Lieutenant Jack McConn in 1945, it had been with their family ever since.[4][5] He recently sold a pair of paintings of Hitler's mother and father. Hitler was known to paint only using water colors and not oil paintings, but Gottlieb claimed these were lost since the end of the war, Gottlieb says he discovered them in Southern California, in the hands of the family whose relatives liberated them from Hitler's Berghof.[6] In 2011, Gottlieb sold a rare Luger pistol once owned by Howard Hughes and screen-used in the 1930 film Hell's Angles.[7]

Controversy

Gottlieb has been criticized[8] for being a war profiteer, marketing fake militaria items, refusing to honor his written warranty of authenticity when requested and inappropriately capitalizing on Nazi memorabilia and the Holocaust selling used Zyklon B gas canisters and Jewish concentration camp clothing items.[9] He has publicly responded noting his own Jewish ancestry, personal mission of historical preservation[10] and his alleged strict policy barring sales to any members of hate groups.[11]

Firearms Industry

In 2010, Gottlieb developed Direct Action Solutions, a firearms manufacturing company located in Southern California. Under his direction, the company represented KRISS-ARMS, developer of the the innovative KRISS sub-machine gun, pistol, and civilian carbine. He introducing all three weapon systems into the law-enforcement and civilian market, before selling the company in 2011. [12]

Media

Gottlieb has authored two books: The SS Totenkopf Ring: An Illustrated History from Munich to Nuremberg, which more experienced collectors and experts proclaim to be a total fabrication of the facts regarding how these rings were really made.[13] and History's Jackpot: Investing in Antique Collectibles.[14] His latest book on Nazi political decorations is due out in 2012, with his 4th book, titled Weird Guns, is currently in development.[15] He has been featured in newspapers world-wide, appeared on Fox,[16] NBC, Spike (TV channel)[17],Perez Hilton[18] and other news outlets. Gottlieb has appeared on episodes of Auction Hunters, and has filmed appearances for Pawn Stars, scheduled for release in 2012.[19] He is attached to a history-based TV project currently in development.[20] He has been surrounded by much controversy on several well recognized militaria collector forums.
