Plot summary
The story starts where the previous book left off. Stranded in new star system--only to enter the crosshairs of another hostile alien armada. Ignoring all of the First Fleet's attempts to communicate peaceful intentions, this system's species send their ships into battle on suicide runs, while guarding the exiting jump point with a fortress of incalculable power. The new race a named "Bear-cows" for the teddy bear look and herd mentality. The bear-cows or 'kicks' are herbivores with a herd mentality and view anything else as a mortal threat that can't be negotiated with due to likely deception and desire to eat them, so they don't respond to communications and commit suicide with their brains as soon as they realize they've been captured. The Enigma hope that these bear cows will end the human fleet's threat. Of course the Enigma don't know Jack.
They managed to escape the system only to encounter a tried alien race. This new race is willing to communicate and defend against the previous encountered race. The third species is known as the spider-wolves or 'dancers' and though still very odd, at least communicate with humans and don't kill them on sight and have thought patterns we can relate to. They appear to tend towards viewing things in terms of patterns, as opposed to our binary tendencies.
The fleet is in bad shape. The components were built for ships with very short operational effectiveness expectations. This was fine when the ships were being destroyed in a couple of years due to the tactics of the war with the Syndicates. But since Geary was brought up on a different tradition, the ships are lasting beyond their expected life. Components are wearing out faster than they can be replaced. This leads to failures at inopportune times. System failures just prior to battle are a bad thing.
To top it all off, the Enigma may be planning another foray into human space. With the Fleet a long way from Midway, and the Syndicates infighting, the window is open for an attack that will give the Enigma an opportunity to expand their space, or destroy their enemies.
