National Non-Fiction Day (NNFD) is annual celebration of children's non-fiction in the UK.[1] [2]
It was initiated by The Federation of Children's Book Groups in partnership with Scholastic Children’s Books and is celebrated across the UK each year on the first Thursday in November (at approximately the same time as the announcement of the winners of the School Library Association Information Book Award[3]).
The day is used by libraries, schools, literacy organisations, book reviewers and parents to highlight the best information and narrative non-fiction books for children, and to show how it’s not just fiction that can be read and enjoyed for pleasure [4]. Each year there is a different theme to the day.
In 2012 National Non-Fiction Day falls on 1 November.
History
Founder, Adam Lancaster, initially set up a national celebration of Non-fiction to provide an opportunity for all types of reading to be celebrated. At the launch of NNFD, at The Federation of Children's Book Groups's annual conference in 2010, he referenced the number of high profile fiction awards and special days in the children's book world hoping to bring National Non-Fiction Day in line with these[5].
