Slender is a free indie-developed psychological horror/survival horror video game released in June 2012 as a beta for Microsoft Windows and OS X. The game is based on the Something Awful forums' creation, Slender Man.[1]

Gameplay

Slender begins with the player in a forest at night. The player is equipped with a flashlight with a battery which must be conserved. The player is able to jog for a short period to 10 various landmarks scattered throughout the woods including vehicles, a building, a giant tree, rocks, brick walls, a stone pillar, a tunnel, and fuel tanks.[2] Dirt paths are present, but the player is able to travel in any direction and is only bound by fences which enclose the area.

Objective

The goal of the game is to find a total of eight pages hidden on 8 of the 10 major landmarks in the forest, though collecting the 8 pages will not end the game.[3] Each page is a message or drawing concerning Slender Man, who pursues the player through the forest. Each time the player collects a page (or if the player fails to collect a page after a certain period of time) Slender Man's pursuit of the player becomes more urgent.[4] Since version 0.9.4 the player wakes up during daytime, before the credits roll, unlocking Daytime Mode.

Slender Man

Slender Man is an entity that follows the player through the forest. It resembles a tall, thin man with elongated arms dressed in a black suit with a featureless, pale white face. When the player catches a glimpse of Slender Man, a startling music sting is played, but only once, unless the Slender Man returns while searching for the player. As the Slender Man catches up to the player, the screen becomes distorted with static, and if the player looks at it directly at close range for an extended amount of time, the screen will fade to static and Slender Man's pale white, featureless face appears on the screen as the game ends. Slender Man can also turn the player around if he gets too close, also ending the game.

Development and release

The game was created by Mark J. Hadley, known on YouTube as AgentParsec.[5]

Version 0.9.1 was the first stable release. It differed from other versions in that, if the player does not have all 8 pages and is caught by the Slender Man, the game ends immediately and closes.

Version 0.9.4 introduced "Daytime Mode" where the player awakes in the daytime after collecting all eight pages. The daytime mode is simply during the day and without a flashlight.

From version 0.9.5 on, successfully completing the game for the first time unlocks "MH mode" (which is based on the Slender Man mythos based web series Marble Hornets) and another mode called "20 dollar mode", wherein if the player sees Slender Man, a song called Gimme 20 Dollars by American rap artist Ron Browz starts playing. It comes from a fan-fiction that said that all that Slender Man wanted was just 20 US dollars.

Reception

Some publications noted the effectiveness of the game's minimalist horror approach, contrasting it with many action-based survival horror games of the time period, such as the latest Resident Evil and Silent Hill titles.[6] Gaming website IGN called Slender "pure horror", claiming "few horror games thrust you directly into the heart of fear". The game is also unique from many horror games in that you can't continue the game after pausing it, making it so players can't stop to calm down after being frightened.

The official website crashed after a flood of people tried to download the game, leading to subsequent mirror downloads on Reddit and later MediaFire.[3][7]

On gaming website Atomic Gamer, Slender v0.9.6 had 264,733 downloads as of August 18.[8][9]
