Hal Anderson is a Radio DJ for Power 97 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was born in Picture Butte, Alberta

Popular in the city, Anderson encouraged listeners to vote for him as "The Greatest Canadian" in 2004 as a joke. He placed 34th of 50 people, above William Lyon Mackenzie King, Wilfrid Laurier, Jean Chrétien and Tecumseh. (He expressed regret after the results were in that he beat out Mr. Dressup.)

The fact that a radio jockey who has contributed little or nothing to the betterment of Canada as a whole can be voted as "greater" than many historical figures, is a prime example of some of the failures of direct democracy. It shows how easily it can be twisted to suit the needs of an organized group, with or without regard for the purpose of the vote itself.
