As said, since 1993 he was well known as an expirienced B.A.S.E. jumper. He won many awards and has done many succesful leaps including: a jump from Petronas KL Towers (Malaysia), Troll Wall (Norway), Cave Of The Swallows (Mexico). He even participated in making the world's record in jumping from fixed objects, in July 3rd 2004 (30 jumpers leapt at the same time). Unfortunately, on 25th April 2001 (Garie Beach, Australia) he had a tragic accident in which he was badly injured (3 broken vertebrae, 2 broken femur, broken collarbone, punctured lung, smashed pelvis). But despite the accident, a year later, he was back on the roll. He was always active in B.A.S.E. jumping. Then on October 5, 2004 during Chinese National Day Holiday, a multi-national group of BASE jumpers (invited by the Shanghai Sports Bureau) leapt from the top of the tower. On 6th October, 34-year old Australian, Roland Simpson, leapt from the Jin Mao Building (the tallest scyscraper in China) in a wingsuit and after a good jump and flight, he had a parachute malfunction and crashed on an adjacent building. He fell into a coma, and died from his injuries in Canberra Hospital at 2.30pm (AEST) following repatriation on October 22, 2004.

BIOGRAPHY

Roland Simpson, known by the nickname Slim, was an experienced and well known B.A.S.E. (an acronym for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth) jumper with 1000+ jumps. He was born in Australia, 1969. Since 1993 he has been a huge inspiration for all in the sport of B.A.S.E. jumping. A true tandem master, and later on, when the birdman wingsuit was developed, one of the instructors in using such a suit. In 1998 he became the US national exit style champion and the next year (1999) the US national champ. A real inspiration for all with his outgoing and terrifying jumps. Whatever the situation was, he always had a smile on his face! Despite his death in China, 2004, he will be missed, but remembered from all who knew him!
