The Institute for the Study of International Development (ISID) is the interdisciplinary center at McGill University in Montreal for the researching and teaching of international development theory, policy and practice.
Founded in 2008,[1] ISID absorbed the former Center for Developing Areas Studies. Its founding director, Dr. Philip Oxhorn (PhD Harvard), envisioned an institute that brought together theory and practice and encompassed various disciplines in order to facilitate unique and dynamic teaching programs and practical work on development related issues in a changing global context.[2] He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Latin American Research Review. Dr. Oxhorn’s research focuses on the comparative study of civil society and its role in supporting democratic regimes, particularly in Latin America.[3]
ISID's mandate is to bridge the worlds of theory and practice of international development. ISID looks at development in terms of democratic government, while putting strong emphasis on economic development.[4].
ISID's research is broadly focused on the foundations of democratic governance and the interactions between the state and civil society, in order to fulfill the institute's mandate. Similar to its predecessor, the CDAS, ISID facilitates knowledge sharing between academia and various community stakeholders, including NGOs, the public and private sectors and civil society, in the research process.[5]
ISID focuses its broader research interests into three distinct clusters: Economic Development & Living Standards, States and State Institutions, Civil Society: Identity, Diversity and the Mediation of Difference.[6]
ISID offers several undergraduate programs including International Development Studies, Latin American and Caribbean studies and African studies. ISID has gained recognition for its Development Studies Option (DSO) at the master’s level within the participating departments of anthropology, economics, geography, history, sociology and political science.[7]
Since 2009 ISID has supported research and discussion on the issue of public-private partnerships, particularly within the extractive and mining industries.[8]
