Patricia Monaghan, Ph.D., (15 February 1946-10 November 2012) is one of the pioneers of the contemporary women's spirituality movement.[1] She is the author of more than 15 books of poetry and nonfiction, including the two volume Encyclopedia of Goddesses and Heroines. She lives in Black Earth, Wisconsin (although she holds dual Irish and American citizenship), where she and her husband Michael McDermott tend a vineyard and large organic garden. She is also a wine expert,[2] and author of Wineries of Minnesota and Wisconsin. She is a founder of and Senior Fellow at The Black Earth Institute,[3] connecting earth, spirit and society through the arts.

Monaghan holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in English, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, and a Ph.D. in Literature & Science.[4] She is professor of interdisciplinary studies at Chicago's DePaul University School for New Learning.[4]

Monaghan is a winner of a Pushcart Prize for Literature (2004).[5] Her work was also included in "Best American Spiritual Writing" that year.[6]
